CHRISTIAN LILLINGERs
Open Form For Society II (OFFS II)

Double Vinyl 180g & CD

OFFS II is the consistent continuation of Christian Lillinger’s compositional work and marks the second phase of the project. At its core lies a radically condensed form of chamber music, conceived and developed over a period of three years.
The works are based on a specially developed instrumentation consisting of five keyboard instruments, vibraphone, and three basses. Structural compression, rhythmic polyphony, and complex temporal relationships form the foundation of the compositions. The conducting is carried out via metronome and click track; all material is organized on a grid. Within this strict order, spaces of freedom emerge in which individual shaping and independent interpretative decisions become possible.

Primary and secondary voices shift continuously, and the focus remains deliberately unstable. Dynamics are often self-determined, opening up a reflective engagement with sound, space, and time. The music unfolds as an articulated network of sounds and propositions that does not establish hierarchies, but instead provokes autonomous points of access.

In contrast to the first edition, which emphasized separation in the studio, OFFS II concentrates on the unity of a shared space. The recordings were made at the Deutschlandfunk studios in Cologne and reflect a live sonic image in which all material—apart from a few conceptual cut-up procedures—sounds, decays, and breathes within a single room.

Condensed polyphony, microtonal shifts, irrational time structures, serial conception, and sonically interconnected sound collages (musique concrète) appear from shifting perspectives: sometimes in extreme proximity, sometimes from a distant bird’s-eye view. This constant zooming defines OFFS II as a multilayered, hyperreal sound field that points toward the almost inaudible.
